  • Washington: Researchers have found a way to make smoking less toxic using natural antioxidant extracts in cigarette filters.

Cornell University researchers were able to demonstrate that lycopene and grape seed extract used in cigarette filters drastically reduced the amount of cancer-causing free radicals passing through the filter.

“The implications of this technique can help reduce the hazardous effects of tobacco smoke, because free radicals are a major group of carcinogens,” said Dr. Boris Dzilkovski, who co-authored the paper.

Scientists have tried to make safer cigarettes in the past.

Haemoglobin (which transports oxygen in red blood cells) and activated carbon have been shown to reduce free radicals in cancer smoke by up to 90 percent, but because of the cost, the combination has not been successfully introduced to the market.
The research will be published in the groundbreaking Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE), the only peer-reviewed, PubMed indexed video-journal.

Can You Quit Smoking With E-Cigarettes?

  • Tuesday, 3 January 2012

  • If you're a smoker who is interested in putting an end to your habit, you might have heard rumors about these cool novelty gadgets called "e-cigarettes," which, some say, can be effective aids for quitting smoking. And even if you're not interested in quitting for the time being, maybe you've heard of e-cigarettes as alternatives to use in situations where real cigarettes are unacceptable. Whatever you've heard, read on, and I'll fill you in on all the details.

    What are E-Cigarettes?

Just in case you've never heard of these cool gadgets called e-cigarettes, they're a brilliant little invention that lets smokers "light up" without actually lighting up. Rather than using real tobacco, they use a tobacco-based solution that is vaporized and inhaled by the user. They are powered by batteries, and each dose lasts for about as many inhales as a real cigarette.

In other words, e-cigarettes resemble real cigarettes in almost every possible way. The main difference is that they're made of metal, so they obviously don't burn down like real cigarettes do. However, even though they're made of metal, the material is lightweight, so that it has almost the same weight as an actual cigarette.

All in all, these cool gadgets replicate the real experience of smoking, but there's no smoke and no fire. What this means is that you can smoke anywhere. Even if you live in one of those cities that has banned smoking in bars or in public spaces, you can light up an e-cigarette anywhere.

Of course, you may get strange looks at first, but once people figure out that you're not actually smoking, e-cigarettes become a great conversation starter.

    Can E-Cigarettes Help Quit Smoking?

Here's the thing: Even though there is some anecdotal proof that e-cigarettes can help people quit smoking, numerous government organizations everywhere from the U.S. to Europe to Australia have publicly stated that e-cigarettes are not quit smoking aids, and that they may, in fact, have many of the same risks as real cigarettes.

Thus, we know what the officials have to say about e-cigarettes. But on a person-to-person basis, the real story about these cool novelty gadgets is quite different. In fact, if you ask around among people who have tried this invention, you'll find many people who say that e-cigarettes have helped them quit smoking. So, even though governments may say otherwise, the people are saying different. Interpret this information as you wish.

But if you're wondering how this might work, the mechanism is simple. The tobacco solution that you "smoke" with e-cigarettes is made from real tobacco and it has real nicotine at about the same level as real cigarettes do. Thus, when you use these cool gadgets, you get your nicotine fix, but you don't inhale all those burning toxins that come with real smoke.

Yes, there are undoubtedly some health effects to e-cigarettes, but the invention is too new for us to have any truly accurate information. But at this time, it's reasonable to assume that they're safer than real cigarettes, so why not at least try quitting this way? Just switch over to e-cigarettes, and then gradually reduce your dosage until you're nicotine free.

Using Exercise to Help You Quit Smoking

  • Sunday, 25 December 2011

  • Once you've finally decided to stop smoking, you'll find that you will need something to replace that habit. It's very difficult to stop smoking, some say it's harder to stop smoking than it is to stop taking addictive narcotics. Exercise can be the key to you being able to sustain your regimen. Exercise gives you endorphins, which replaces the serotonin that smoking used to give you... the 'feel good' hormone.

You should sign up to a gym. I'm 57 years old and I signed up for a gym. I used to smoke, and now that I've stopped, I'm so glad that I did. I started coming down with symptoms of emphysema. You realize that emphysema can't be reversed, it can only be slowed-down. Walking and running will condition your lungs and heart so that you won't have such problems with breathing, as you probably do now.

If you learn to walk more, and get more aerobic exercise in, then your battered body will reward you by you're breathing better. You should also do things with your diet, at the same time, in order to better your health. Antioxidants will help repair the damage you've done to your lungs. Walking at least a half-hour a day is essential. Start with the jogging machine, and start off by walking four miles-per-hour for ten minute's duration. After a week, increase that to 15 minutes.

Remember that you've starved your heart muscles for a long time. Oxygen is essential to muscle tissue, and you've been taking oxygen away from your system by smoking. Now, I found that doing some rounds on the Nautilus equipment helps condition you body and build it up enough so that you have endurance, but it's not essential. You can get back into health just by either jogging, swimming or walking.

Oftentimes, the problem to exercise is... people start off too fast. They rush too many exercises into their regimen too quickly; then, when they have pain all over their body, the never go back again. Always write down your exercises on a log sheet, when you first begin. That way you can make sure you don't overdo. If you do Nautilus equipment, make sure you keep it steady. A good rule-of-thumb is to do two repetitions of ten. Always start off much lower than you think is actually good for you. After three days, if you don't have any pain, increase that by only five pounds.

The best time to exercise at a gym is in the morning. It's been shown that if you do your exercise in the morning, you'll stick with an exercise program longer than if you do it in the evening. After work you'll go, "Aw. I feel to tired to go to the gym." Remember that going to the gym will make you feel more invigorated, not more tired. Stay clear from drinking coffee, too. Switch to green tea. Green tea is filled with antioxidants and is very healthy for you.

If you learn to do such things as yoga, or other stress-reducing exercises, then that will help you keep from smoking. Learn to take time for yourself. Smoking used to give you that excuse to relax for a time, find a good substitute so that you're not a work-aholic. Learn to shut off the TV; TV isn't conducive to health. Start playing games such as Scrabble or Boggle. They'll get your mind active, and you won't just veg out at the TV.

Learn slow-breathing techniques. As you slowly inhale, concentrate on the most beautiful day of your life. Count as you breathe in, and count again as you breathe out, keeping the breath slow and regular. Realize that if you breathe out too much, you actually limit the amount of oxygen going to your body by retaining carbon dioxide. So, think more about holding your breath than breathing deeply and you'll realize how little breath you really need; strange enough, that will give your body more oxygen in the end.
