A dozen compounds found in apple peels either inhibited or killed cancer cells in laboratory cultures, according to researchers at Cornell University. These compounds, called triterpenoids, either stopped growth of or destroyed human liver colon, and breast cancer cells in laboratory cultures.
Researchers isolated and extracted the pure compounds from Red Delicious apple peels (triterpenoids are also present in other types of apples). Apples also contain phytochemicals, such as flavonoids and phenolic acids, that appear to have anti-cancer properties.
